Who said supply chains are boring?

Whenever I tell a friend, colleague or family member about my job as soon as the words "supply chain" are muttered I immediately see glassy eyes followed by a yawn or two. Little do they realize that every time they discard or recycle a carton of milk they are completing the end of the supply chain cycle. Without supply chains consumers would be stuck using products that they had to make or grow with their own two hands. Still not excited, well visit often and eventually you will be.

Vintage IBM Logistics

A few years ago I came across some vintage photos of IBM shipping hardware in Italy, including on a gondola in Venice. Thanks to my colleague in Haifa another great photo featuring the now defunct PAA or Pan American Airways.

Below is the IBM 305 RAMAC, the first 'SUPER' computer with a hard disk drive (HDD). The HDD weighed over a ton and stored a 'whopping' 5 MB of data. Compare that to your iPod or USB stick.

The funny thing is, 60 years later we are still using air to transport these massive computers, which while being thousands of times more powerful are just as large.
